The 2020-21 German Bundesliga kicked off at the Allianz Arena on Friday night as treble winners Bayern Munich started with an 8-0 thumping of Schalke 04.
Serge Gnabry got the scoring underway inside four minutes with a sweet left-footed finish from 18 yards after an excellent first touch took him past centre-back Benjamin Stambouli.
Hansi Flick’s side doubled their lead 15 minutes later when Thomas Muller set up Leon Goretzka to stroke home from 18 yards as Schalke never looked in the game.
Ozan Kabak received a yellow card in conceding a penalty for going through the back of Robert Lewandowski after half hour. The Polish striker picked himself up to fire the hosts into a 3-0 lead.
Within 90 seconds of the restart, Joshua Kimmich’s through ball played Leroy Sane in on goal. The debutant unselfishly squared the ball to Gnabry to tap home his second goal.
The duo teamed up again for the fifth as Gnabry completed his hat-trick on the hour with another tap-in.
Thomas Muller got his name on the scoresheet 10 minutes later with a fine volley, setup by a Lewandowski rabona. However, Schalke goalkeeper Ralf Fahrmann should have been able to keep the former German international’s effort out.
Summer signing Sane made it 7-0 two minutes later when Kimmich was able to play the attacker in one-on-one from deep in his own half. The arrival from Manchester City coolly slotted into the bottom corner as Fahrmann attempted to close him down.
The final goal proved to be a record breaker as 17-year-old substitute Jamal Musiala became Bayern Munich’s youngest-ever goalscorer when he cut inside and fired into the bottom corner at the near post to make it 8-0.
