Werder Bremen did themselves a world of good in their relegation battle with a 1-0 win away to freefalling Schalke 04 on Saturday.
Former Borussia Dortmund midfielder Leonardo Bittencourt scored the only goal of the game with a fine 20-yard strike into the far corner just after the half hour mark.
Schalke created more in the second half but ultimately couldn’t find a breakthrough. Neither side produced many memorable moments either side of the goal. Kevin Vogt had a busy game in midfield for the visitors, breaking up Schalke’s possession time and time again.
Three points for Florian Kohfeldt’s side have moved them to within two points of the relegation play-off spot prior to Fortuna Dusseldorf’s trip to Bayern Munich this evening, and three points behind Mainz 05 in automatic safety.
Werder Bremen are now unbeaten in their last three games – winning 1-0 away to SC Freiburg and drawing 0-0 at home to Borussia Monchengladbach prior to this game whilst the sides directly above them continue to drop points.
David Wagner’s side are now winless in their last 11 Bundesliga games, picking up just four points during this run and losing five of their last six.
