VfB Stuttgart have announced head coach Pellegrino Matarazzo has signed an early contract extension the day before their crunch tie with Hamburger SV.
The Swabians sit third in the 2. Bundesliga, one point behind the team they host on Thursday evening and eight behind leaders Arminia Bielefeld with seven games to play.
Stuttgart CEO Thomas Hitzlsperger announced the news on the club’s official website:
“This contract extension had been planned for weeks now, and it is our way of demonstrating that we want to focus on consistency. Working together already with Pellegrino Matarazzo has made it clear to us that he has all the personal and professional skills required to be part of the club for a long time to come. In the space of just a few months, Pellegrino has shown that he is a perfect fit for VfB Stuttgart. In conjunction with the current sporting management team, the coach will have a considerable impact on the future of VfB Stuttgart on the pitch.”
Pellegrino Matarazzo became head coach of VfB Stuttgart at the end of December 2019, replacing Tim Walter.
The Baden-Wurttemberg club have lost both games since the 2. Bundesliga restarted 10 days ago, leaving themselves in a battle with Hamburger SV and potentially FC Heidenheim for the second automatic promotion spot. They were relegated from the Bundesliga last season after losing the relegation play-off to Union Berlin on away goals.
