Borussia Dortmund made it two wins from two following the restart of the 2019-20 Bundesliga season with a 2-0 win away to VfL Wolfsburg on Saturday afternoon.
The trip to the Volkswagen Arena wasn’t expected to be an easy one and Lucien Favre’s side didn’t have things all their own way.
Raphael Guerreiro opened the scoring on the half hour mark with the visitors’ only effort on target in the first half. The opportunity well to the Portuguese wingback at the back post after Erling Haaland kicked air on Thorgan Hazard’s low cross. It’s now three goals in two games for Guerreiro.
Wolfsburg took the game to Dortmund in the second half but rarely tested Roman Burki between the posts. Several low crosses into the box evaded defenders but also failed to connect with the attackers on several occsions.
The introduction of Jadon Sancho just after the hour mark sparked Borussia Dortmund into life. The England international’s excellent dip of the shoulder started the counter-attack from which he setup Achraf Hakimi to score the second 20 minutes from time.
Oliver Glasner’s side offered little after that and were even reduced to 10 men for the final 10 minutes when Felix Klaus was shown a straight red upon inspection from VAR following a stamp.
Borussia Dortmund reduce Bayern Munich’s lead to one point in the process, with the Bundesliga leaders in action at home to lowly Eintracht Frankfurt in Saturday’s evening kickoff.
