The quarter-finals of the 2019-20 DFB Pokal have been completed and the final four teams in this season’s competition have been confirmed.
Fourth-tier Saarbrucken eliminated Bundesliga strugglers Fortuna Dusseldorf in the first quarter-final on Tuesday evening after goalkeeper Daniel Batz saved five penalties – one in the second half and four in the penalty shootout. Die Molschder won 7-6 on spot kicks after a 1-1 draw after 120 minutes. Saarbrucken have reached the German cup final and were last in the semi-finals back in 1985.
In the second game on Tuesday, Bayern Munich beat Schalke 04 1-0 to reach the semi-finals for the 11th successive year. Joshua Kimmich scored the only goal of the game shortly before half-time. Both sides fielded strong sides in a competitive game at the Veltins Arena.
On Wednesday, Bayer 04 Leverkusen were 3-1 winners at home to Union Berlin. Die Werkself trailed 0-1 at the break before scoring three times in the final 20 minutes to progress. Moussa Diaby sealed the game in stoppage time for Peter Bosz’ side after Charles Aranguiz had given them the lead with five minutes remaining.
The fourth semi-finals of this season’s competition are the 2018 winners and five-time champions Eintracht Frankfurt. They came through safely as 2-0 winners against Werder Bremen with an Andre Silva penalty deep in first half stoppage time and Daichi Kamara’s goal on the hour.
The semi-final draw will be made on the evening of Sunday 8 March 2020.
