Bayern Munich have more than one foot in the quarter-finals of this season’s UEFA Champions League following a comfortable 3-0 thrashing of Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday evening.
This was the first time the two teams had met since the 2012 Champions League final at the Allianz Arena.
Although the half-time score was 0-0, the German champions were well on top during the opening 45 minutes.
Hansi Flick’s side’s dominance was rewarded inside 10 minutes of the second half when Serge Gnabry scored twice, both assisted by an unselfish Robert Lewandowski. The Polish striker eventually got on the scoresheet himself, turning home Alphonso Davies’ cross at the back post with 15 minutes to play. The Canadian winger-come-full-back superbly dribbled past two Chelsea players on an excellent run down the left.
Chelsea rarely threatened Manuel Neuer’s goal, particularly during a dominant second half performance from the visitors. Marcos Alonso was sent off late on for the hosts as Bayern Munich lived up to their pre-match expectations as clear favourites.
The second leg in Germany will be played on Wednesday 18 March 2020.
