Erling Haaland made one of the greatest debuts in both Bundesliga and world football history on Saturday when he came off the bench in the 56th minute at 1-3 away to FC Augsburg before netting a hat-trick to help Borussia Dortmund win 5-3.
The 19-year-old was hot property prior to making his switch to Signal Iduna Park at the end of December. He had scored an incredible eight goals in his first six Champions League appearances this season (4 starts), whilst playing for Red Bull Salzburg. He is eligible to play for BVB in the remainder of this season’s competition following the change in rules from UEFA last season. The German side face Paris Saint-Germain in the Round of 16 next month.
Speaking after the game, Borussia Dortmund head coach Lucien Favre was full of praise for the club’s winter signing:
“Erling has settled in well and immediately showed his strengths by making runs in behind. He moves very well between the lines and offers us other possibilities in our attacking play. We played Gio Reyna too. He was very good. It was a crazy match. We should’ve already been ahead in the first period. But rather than taking the lead, we lost the first half 1-0 instead. We switched to a back four because the opposition was leading and we absolutely wanted to win. We had to take greater risks at that point. We did well in that respect. We started to attack after that. We know that we have the abilities to make an impact [going forward].”
Erling Haaland replaced Marco Reus just before the hour mark and scored with each of his three attempts in the final half hour away to FC Augsburg. Victory keeps Favre’s side within seven points of Bundesliga leaders RB Leipzig.
This performance will have caught the eye of football fans around the world and now they will be anticipating the Norwegian international being handed his first start for his new club when Borussia Dortmund host FC Köln next weekend.
