Bayern Munich have today announced the signing of Alexander Nübel from Schalke 04.
The former Germany U21 goalkeeper will remain at the Royal Blues for the remainder of the 2019-20 Bundesliga campaign before joining up with his new team at the end of the season. The 23-year-old had not signed a new contract with the Gelsenkirchen-based club and will be joining Bayern on a free transfer on 1 July. He has signed a five-year deal at the Allianz Arena.
It is almost nine years since Bayern Munich signed their current number one goalkeeper, Manuel Neuer, also from Schalke 04.
Nübel made his Bundesliga debut for Schalke in the final matchday of the 2015-16 season in a 4-1 win over 1899 Hoffenheim. He was just 19 years old at the time, but had to wait another two years before his next outing with Schalke. The 6’4″ stopper has been their first choice since the second half of last season.
Alexander Nübel will be suspended for Schalke’s first game after the winter break when they host Borussia Mönchengladbach on Friday 17 January.
