Borussia Dortmund have confirmed that Julian Weigl has completed a transfer to Portuguese Primeira Liga champions Benfica, subject to a medical.
The central midfielder had played in 13 of BVB’s 19 Bundesliga games (12 games) during the first half of the season, though five of these were filling in at centre-back due to injuries.
Prior to this season, Weigl had been a regular in each of his first three seasons with the North Rhine-Westphalia club following his move from 1860 Munich in 2015.
Borussia Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc revealed that the midfielder wanted the move:
“Julian approached us with this wish and we agreed – also because of his service to the club. We wish him all the best for the future!”
Julian Weigl moved to Borussia Dortmund as a 19-year-old in the summer of 2015 and immediately held down his first team place in the middle of the park for the German giants. He made his debut for the national team the same year and was part of Joachim Löw’s squad for Euro 2016.
He made a total of 171 appearances in all competitions for the club, scoring four goals. Weigl was still under contract at Signal Iduna Park for a further 18 months making this transfer somewhat of a surprise.
