Match report: Freiburg 1-3 Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich took advantage of a wasteful SC Freiburg to win on their final visit to the Schwarzwald-Stadion on Wednesday evening.

The Bavarians created numerous chances of their own in the first half, and could have been ahead inside the opening 60 seconds, before Robert Lewandowski slid in to convert Alphonso Davies’s powerful low cross after quarter-of-an-hour.

SC Freiburg, playing their final season at this old stadium, were somewhat fortunate to be only one down at the break, but came out much better in the second half.

Hansi Flick’s side seemed to take their foot off the pedal after the break and were made to pay just before the hour when Vincenzo Grifo scuffed a volley into the ground to bounce the ball over Manuel Neuer.

Freiburg created more chances as the game went on but were very wasteful with their efforts on goal.

Christian Streich’s side were made to pay when 18-year-old Joshua Zirkzee poked home Bayern Munich’s second in the second minute of stoppage time just minutes after being introduced for his Bundesliga debut.

As the hosts pushed forward for an equaliser, Flick’s side caught them out on the counter attack before Serge Gnabry made it 3-1. The German international had earlier had a close range header ruled out for Lewandowski being offside.
