Bayern Munich defender Lucas Hernández is set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines after it was confirmed on Wednesday that the France international will require surgery.
The 2018 World Cup winner only arrived in an €80 million deal from Atlético Madrid over the summer.
Following a scan by Dr. Hans-Wilhelm Müller-Wohlfahrt and his medical team, it has been revealed that the 23-year-old sustained a partial ligament tear in his right ankle during the 3-2 win at Olympiacos in the Champions League on Tuesday night. He was replaced by Jérôme Boateng on the hour.
Lucas Hernández has made six Bundesliga appearances and two in the Champions League to start his career in Munich. Head coach Hans-Dieter Flick has Jérôme Boateng, Benjamin Pavard and Javi Martínez available at centre-back, but Niklas Süle is also sidelined for the long-term. Fellow French international Pavard started Tuesday’s win alongside Hernández in the middle of a back four in Niko Kovač’s starting lineup.
