Borussia Dortmund right-back has joined Italian Serie A club Sassuolo on a season-long loan.
The 24-year-old originally signed at Signal Iduna Park from 1899 Hoffenheim in 2017 but failed to settle in, making just 18 league appearances in his first 18 months. Toljan was sent out to Scottish Premier League champions Celtic for the second half of last season but could only make eight league appearances.
Toljan will now have an opportunity to prove himself in another one of Europe’s top leagues for a side that spend a lot of time defending.
The former German Under-21 international came through the youth ranks of VfB Stuttgart and 1899 Hoffenheim before he made his Bundesliga debut for the latter as a 19-year-old in 2013. Jeremy Toljan went on make 54 league appearances for Die Kraichgauer before joining Borussia Dortmund.
Lucien Favre used three different players at right-back last season – Lukasz Piszczek, Achraf Hakimi and Marius Wolf. Toljan may feel he’s missed out on the opportunity for playing for one of Germany’s biggest clubs.
