Newly-promoted Bundesliga side Union Berlin have strengthened their defence with the acquisition of experienced centre-back Neven Subotic from French Ligue 1 side Saint-Etienne.
The former Serbian international was a mainstay in the French side’s defence last season, helping them qualify for the UEFA Europa League with a fourth-place finish.
Subtoic’s contract expired at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard on 1 July and has been able to move back to Germany on a free transfer.
The 30-year-old spent two seasons in France after finally leaving Borussia Dortmund in 2017. Subotic won two Bundesliga titles as a regular partner to Mats Hummels in the middle of Jürgen Klopp’s defence in 2011 and 2012 but found himself out of the team at the end of the 2014-15 campaign.
Union Berlin have penned their latest signing down to a two-year contract at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei.
The Bundesliga newcomers start their maiden season on Sunday 18 August at home to RB Leipzig.
