Borussia Dortmund have announced the signing of 19-year-old right-back Mateu Morey from FC Barcelona.
The Spanish youth player has signed a five-year contract at Signal Iduna Park until 30 June 2024. He joins on a free transfer from Camp Nou.
Morey was part of the Barcelona side that won the 2016-17 UEFA Youth League.
BVB sporting director Michael Zorc welcomed Mateu Morey to the Black-Yellows:
‘‘Mateu Morey is a top defensive talent from the Barcelona academy, who possesses exceptional technical quality. We see this transfer as one for the future and we are greatly looking forward to developing Mateu as part of our first-team squad.”
Mateu Morey told the club’s official website:
‘‘Borussia Dortmund are a fantastic club, that place a lot of emphasis on youth. I’m confident that, with my individual qualities, I will have a lot to offer the club in the years to come. I want to integrate myself quickly, support my team and, above all, learn the language. Doing the latter will certainly make everything easier!’’
Mateu Morey can be seen as the long-term replacement for 34-year-old Lukasz Piszczek who made 20 Bundesliga appearances last season. Marius Wolf and Achraf Hakimi also started in the right-back position under Lucien Favre last season.
Borussia Dortmund have a reputation for playing and developing young stars and last season was no exception to the number of youngsters that were given an opportunity under the Swiss head coach.
