Borussia Dortmund have announced the signing of Julian Brandt from fellow Bundesliga side Bayer 04 Leverkusen.
The 23-year-old has signed a five-year deal at the eight times champions of Germany, until 30 June 2024. Both clubs have agreed not to disclose details of the transfer.
Brandt scored seven goals and added 11 assists in 33 Bundesliga appearances (30 starts) last season.
BVB sporting director Michael Zorc was excited by the club’s latest acquisition:
“Although Julian Brandt has already been playing in the Bundesliga for some time and has lots of experience at both national and international level, at 23 years of age he’s still a young player with lots of potential for development. He can be deployed in several attacking positions and will enhance our game with his creativity.”
Julian Brandt came through the youth system at VfL Wolfsburg but made his Bundesliga debut at the age of 17 shortly after joining Bayer 04 Leverkusen. He has gone on to make 165 league appearances, scoring a total of 34 goals and adding 41 assists. He has also made 15 Champions League appearances.
He has 25 caps for the German national team, scoring two goals. He was part of Joachim Low’s side that won the 2017 Confederations Cup and was part of the squad at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
Brandt was excited to complete his transfer:
“I’m very motivated and optimistic!”
“I’m a person for whom gut instinct and having a good feeling is important when it comes to decisions. When it comes to Borussia Dortmund, I have a very good feeling. I would like to continue my personal development, that’s one of the main reasons for my transfer. BVB came extremely close to winning the title last season. So there’s room for improvement. I have high hopes with the lads, I’m very motivated and optimistic – not just when it comes to my development as an individual, but the development of the entire team too.”
Julian Brandt becomes Borussia Dortmund’s fourth summer signing following the arrivals of Paco Alcacer, Nico Schulz and Thorgan Hazard.
