Bayer Munich have agreed a deal to sign 2018 World Cup winner Benjamin Pavard from VfB Stuttgart.
The transfer of the 22-year-old will not go through until 1 July 2019. Pavard will continue to help Stuttgart in their relegation battle during the second half of the 2018-19 Bundesliga campaign.
Pavard has signed a five-year deal at the Allianz Arena.
Sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic announced the news at Bayern Munich’s winter training camp in Doha:
“We’ve signed Benjamin Pavard for 1 July 2019. He’s put pen to paper on a five-year contract. He’s a young player and a world champion. We’re very glad and proud to have gained such a player for FC Bayern.”
Bayern Munich already have a top right-back in Joshua Kimmich so it will be interesting to see what plans the Bavarians and head coach Niko Kovac have in mind for the French international. Benjamin Pavard is also adept at playing centre-back.
Benjamin Pavard signed for VfB Stuttgart from Lille in 2016 and has 18 caps for the French national team. He was Didier Deschamps’ first choice throughout their victorious 2018 World Cup. He isn’t the best at crossing from out wide so it could well be that the youngster is Jerome Boateng’s long-term replacement at the record German champions.
