FC Schalke 04 star striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar is set to be sidelined for several weeks after tearing the medial collateral ligaments in his left knee during the sides 2-1 victory in the Revierderby on Saturday.
The Dutchman headed the Royal Blues into a 2-0 lead on 35 minutes but was stretchered off less than 10 minutes into the second half after sustaining the injury in an attempt to clear the ball inside his own penalty area.
Club doctors expect last season’s Bundesliga to be out for several weeks but will not require an operation.
Klaas-Jan Huntelaar had scored in back-to-back Bundesliga games, his first goals of 2013 and put him up to 7 on the season; the club’s joint-top scorer with Julian Draxler.
This news means that Schalke 04 will have to field a different striker for the second leg of their Champions League tie with Galatasaray on Tuesday. Teemu Pukki replaced Huntelaar during the Borussia Dortmund game.
