Schalke 04 have confirmed that club captain Benedikt Höwedes has extended his contract through to 30 June 2017.
The news has been announced before the kickoff of the 142nd Revierderby against Borussia Dortmund today.
Benedikt Höwedes, whose previous contract was due to expire at the end of the 2013/14 season said he feels at home in Gelsenkirchen:
“Schalke is a crazy club in the positive sense of the word and I feel totally at home here.”
Sporting director and general manager Horst Heldt was pleased with Höwedes’ renewal:
“Benedikt is a homegrown player, a key performer and one of the faces of our club.”
The Germany international made his debut with the Royal Blues in October 2007 and is set to make his 194th appearance in all competitions for the club this weekend.
Benedikt Höwedes won the DFB Cup in 2011 and was part of Germany’s Euro 2012 squad last summer. He also played for the Germany side that won the European Under-21 Championship in 2009.
