Schalke 04 have completed the signing of Brazilian international Michel Bastos on loan from French Ligue 1 side Olympique Lyonnais.
Michel Bastos will remain with the Royal Blues until the end of the season with the Bundesliga side having an option to buy the left-footed midfielder. Bastos will wear the number 9 shirt.
Sporting director Horst Heldt was pleased with the signing, as quoted from the club’s official website:
“We’re delighted that Michel Bastos is joining us. He’s an internationally experienced player with the skills to improve our game immediately. He’s also eligible to play in the Champions League.”
Michel Bastos started his career with Dutch Eredivisie side Feyenoord in 2001 which included a loan spell with league rivals Excelsior. After returning to Brazil shortly after to have spells with Atletico Paranaense, Gremio and Figueirense, Bastos, who also holds French citizenship returned to Europe with French club LOSC Lille for the 2006/07 season. 98 appearances and 25 goals later he signed for Lyon in 2009/10, scoring 26 goals in the same number of appearances.
The Brazilian has 10 caps for his country and has made 29 appearances in the UEFA Champions League with the two French sides combined. He played in the 2010 World Cup.
Michel Bastos will be available to play in Schalke 04′s Champions League campaign which continues in February with their last 16 encounter with Galatasaray.
