English Premier League side Newcastle United have completed the signing of SC Freiburg’s top scorer Papiss Demba Cisse.
Cisse who is set to play in the African Cup of Nations with Senegal will return to England once his tournament is over and will not play for the Bundesliga side again this season.
The hit man has made his intentions clear that he wanted a move away from Freiburg having giving his all in the Bundesliga for the relegation candidates over the past season and a half. He flew to Tyneside on Tuesday afternoon to undergo his medical after both sides reached a transfer agreement.
Papiss Demba Cisse scored 9 Bundesliga goals this season but wasn’t enough to prevent his guys slipping to the bottom of the table before Christmas. His 22 goals from Freiburg last season helped the side to a surprise top half finish.
The Senegalese striker will join up with his fellow countryman and former 1899 Hoffenheim striker Demba Ba at Newcastle in the Premier League.
SC Freiburg’s sport director Dirk Dufner admitted his side were never going to be hang onto the prolific goalscorer much longer:
“It was clear to us that it was always going to be difficult to keep a player of Papiss’ quality in Breisgau permanently. We’re thankful and proud that he was a big part of our team for the last two years and that his 37 league goals in 65 matches have contributed to an extended period of success since we won promotion. Everyone at SC Freiburg wants to wish him all the best and share in his happiness at taking the next step in his career.”
