Hertha BSC have sacked head coach Markus Babbel with immediate effect.
Sporting director Michael Preetz made the announcement to the media at a quickly-arranged press conference on Sunday:
“Recent developments, especially those of the past couple of days, left us with no choice. It would no longer have been possible to work together under the existing conditions.”
Preetz explained during the press conference that the club feared the good work in gaining promotion back to the Bundesliga last season and their 20-point first half to the season was starting to become undone.
Assistant coach Rainer Widmayer will take charge of training on Monday. The Bundesliga now goes on a winter break. Hertha Berlin will resume their campaign on Saturday 21 January 2012 with a trip to FC Nürnberg.
