Bayern squeeze past Augsburg

Bayern Munich retained their 5 point lead at the top of the Bundesliga with a narrow victory at FC Augsburg this afternoon.

Jupp Heynckes side raced out to a 2-0 lead before the half hour before tiring out in the second half. Defeat leaves the newly-promoted side remain bottom of the table with just 8 points.

The first opportunity of the game fell to the home side. Sascha Mölders pounced on a slip from Anatoliy Tymoshchuk, but his shot from inside the penalty area went wide. Just 2 minutes after, Manuel Neuer had to head clear from an encroaching Mölders.

The league leaders took full advantage of their opportunity soon after. Franck Ribery’s corner was headed goal bound by tall defender Daniel van Buyten. Augsburg goalkeeper Mohamed Amsif got something on it, but only setup a tap in for Mario Gomez to give the visitors the lead with his 13th league goal of the season after scoring a hat trick in the Champions League midweek.

Gomez was unable to double his goal tally minutes later when his header was fractionally off target after connecting with a rebound from David Alaba’s shot.

Franck Ribery doubled the lead before the half hour when he dribbled past Dominik Reinhardt down the left hand side of the box and drilled home his 6th goal of the season in the opposite corner.

Thomas Müller and Ribery spurned chances later in the first half as Bayern lead 2-0 at the break.

After the break, the home side pulled a goal back. Tobias Werner took the corner that he won before the hour mark, and with it the ball found its way to Hajime Hosogai who halved the deficit.

Bayern Munich were on the back foot in the final 10 minutes as the side propping up the table went in search of an unlikely point. But substitute Edmond Kapllani couldn’t beat Manuel Neuer with a one-on-one opportunity inside the area. Tymoshchuk was shown a straight red card in stoppage time but the hosts couldn’t find another goal.

With this victory, the Bavarians maintain a 5 point lead at the top of the Bundesliga, ahead of Borussia Dortmund, Werder Bremen and Borussia Mönchengladbach who all have 23 points.
