Three goals in the opening 35 minutes from Hertha Berlin lead to 3 more points today as FC Köln could not cope with their first half pressure.
Anis Ben-Hatira had already caused the Köln defence problems racing down the left wing before he setup the opening goal in the 14th minute. A run into the box, passed Kevin McKenna before laying the ball on a plate for Pierre-Michel Lasogga to tap home from 1 yard out.
The same duo combined a dozen minutes later. This time Ben-Hatira, starting for the first time this season provided a delightful cross for Lasogga to throw himself at and put the ball in Michael Rensing’s far corner. 2-0.
The game seemed done and dusted 10 minutes before half time when Christoph Janker’s long chip from the half way line was met with a splendid volley from Raffael across goal to make it 3-0.
The home side sat back for a lot of the second half and were able to soak up the pressure. 1. FC Köln failed to test Thomas Kraft throughout the game, often ending their own attacks with a misplaced pass.
Ståle Solbakken’s side came into this game on impressive form with back-to-back victories over Bayer Leverkusen (4-1) and 1899 Hoffenheim.
Marcus Babbel will be happy with today’s result after going down to a last minute goal from Claudio Pizarro last weekend following his side being reduced to 9 men.
