FC Köln made it back-to-back victories in successive weeks against Champions League challengers with a 2-0 victory over 1899 Hoffenheim this afternoon.
Last weekend, Köln went to Leverkusen and caught the home side on a European hangover as they stunned last season’s runners up with a 4-1 victory at the BayArena.
Today, goals from Mato Jajalo and Lukas Podolski saw Köln pick up 3 points at the RheinEnergieStadion for the first time this season.
The opening goal came on 19 minutes when Sebastian Rudy lost possession in his own half, leaving Lukas Podolski to break down the left before cutting the ball back to Jajalo who rolled the ball home.
The game had made a quiet start previous to that, but Köln were very much on top for the remainder of the first half, despite failing to extend their lead.
Expecting the visitors to come out with attacking intent to start the second half, we were wrong. Lukas Podolski had previously hit the side netting before he got his name on the scoresheet midway through the second half.
Christian Eichner slid Podolski through on goal. The German international, with support to his right, kept his cool and neatly passed the ball into the net, beyond Tom Starke.
Hoffenheim put on some pressure in the final 10 minutes, but it was too little too late as they failed to threaten Michael Rensing in the home goal. Ryan Babel wasting the best opportunity.
This victory moves FC Köln up into 10th position with just 1 game left to play in Matchday 7.
Next weekend, Köln travel to Hertha Berlin in the Saturday evening game. Hoffenheim host current league leaders Bayern Munich.
