Stoppage time winner for Dortmund

Borussia Dortmund snatched a 90th minute winner in Mainz as they picked up their first victory since Matchday 3.

Last weekend, Borussia Dortmund were on the back end of conceding two late goals as they went down in Hannover. Today, Lukasz Piszczek scored a dramatic winner for the defending Bundesliga champions.

Both sides made a quiet start to the game with neither goalkeeper being brought into too much action in the opening half hour.

The breakthrough came in the 33rd minute. Lukasz Piszczek had won the ball near his own corner flag but played a careless pass which Marcel Risse charged down. The ball bounced into Nikolai Müller’s path. Mats Hummels initially blocked the attempt but lost flight of the ball. Müller, lying on the floor spectacularly volleyed the ball home into Roman Weidenfeller’s near post.

Borussia Dortmund’s best attempt in the first half saw Robert Lewandowski break through one-on-one with Heinz Müller, but a very tame effort allowed the experienced goalkeeper to keep the ball out.

The visitors, who came into this game as a bottom half side started the second half brightly. Inside 10 minutes, Mainz had made two last ditch tackles inside their own penalty area and Müller was forced to tip a Shinji Kagawa effort behind for a corner.

Having scored in the Champions League two weeks ago, Ivan Perisic opened his Bundesliga account today. In the 64th minute, the Croatian summer signing picked up the ball inside the opposition penalty area, dragged the ball out from under his feet and poked the ball past Heinz Müller into the bottom corner. 1-1.

Lucas Barrios made his first appearance of the season as he came on for the disappointing Robert Lewandowski for the final quarter of an hour.

In the final 10 minutes Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting was denied by a late saving tackle from Hummels to deny him a one-on-one with Weidenfeller. Minutes later, Andreas Ivanschitz broke through down the right, but his effort with the outside of his left boot was blocked by the Dortmund keeper.

As the game was heading into stoppage time, Dortmund pushed for a winner. And they got it when Heinz Müller’s punch from a corner was smashed back from 25 yards by Lukasz Piszczek and found the net via a deflection.

Mainz players were left with their heads on the ground at full time after a heartbreaking last minute defeat.
