Mario Götze and Shinji Kagawa found their form this afternoon as Borussia Dortmund romped to a 5-1 victory over Wolfsburg.
The defending champions were ahead inside 12 minutes when Götze collected Kagawa’s flick as he took the ball into the penalty area before casually stroking the ball into the bottom right-hand corner of Diego Benaglio’s goal.
Kevin Großkreutz had a chance to double their lead on the half hour mark but his one-on-one effort was dragged narrowly wide.
Minutes later, Mario Mandzukic’s long range effort hit the outside of the post. The home side had been much on top of this point and they got their deserved second on the stroke of half time.
Borussia Dortmund caught Wolfsburg out on the counter attack as Robert Lewandowski broke away before squaring the ball to Shinji Kagawa who rolled the ball home into the bottom corner. 2-0. Wolfsburg’s defensive line were often pushed up too far in this game and poorly executed many offside trap attempts.
Substitute Alexander Hleb scored his first Bundesliga goal since January 2005 on the hour but Wolfsburg were 2 goals down just two minutes later. Sven Bender headed in unmarked at the back post from a corner that was flicked on to give Borussia Dortmund a 3-1 lead.
Midway through the second half Wolfsburg were out of the game. Shinji Kagawa’s pass from midfielder on the counter sent Robert Lewandowski one-on-one with Benaglio and the Pole’s miss-hit chip beat the Swiss goalkeeper.
Mario Götze, who scored in the 12th minute to open the scoring, wrapped up the scoring with 12 minutes to go. Another cool finish, this time after being sent in one-on-one and placing the ball to the side of Benaglio.
This result sends Borussia Dortmund into 2nd position; 2 points behind Bayern Munich who travel to FC Augsburg on Sunday.
