SV Werder Bremen have suspended forwards Marko Arnautovic and Eljero Elia until the end of the season for speeding in the early hours of Friday morning.
Arnautovic and Elia will not participate in training or the final three matches of the season for the first team. Head coach Thomas Schaaf broke the news to the two players on Monday afternoon.
Sporting director Thomas Eichin was quoted on the club’s official website as saying:
“We need the full attention of every player for the final league games. We have made clear to Eljero Elia and Marko Arnautovic again that their behaviour has hurt the team at this stage. Both will do an individual training program outside of the first team squad until the end of the season.”
Marko Arnautovic and Eljero Elia were stopped by police at 3am on Friday morning before before the Bremer junction on the A1 motorway from Osnabrück for speeding.
Neither player participated in Saturday’s 1-0 loss at Bayer 04 Leverkusen.
Austrian Marko Arnautovic will end the season on 5 goals and 6 assists in 26 Bundesliga appearances (21 starts) this season, mainly from the right wing. He has also received 8 yellow cards and was sent off during the 3-2 loss in Hamburg in January.
Netherlands international Eljero Elia failed to score in his 24 Bundesliga appearances (22 starts) this season but recorded 3 assists. One of those came in a man of the match effort in beating Hannover 96 2-0 on Friday 1 February.
