Mainz 05 have announced there will be no new contract for midfielder Andreas Ivanschitz to sign, meaning the 29-year old is free to leave at the end of the season.
The announcement ended media speculation that the Austrian would be leaving at the end of the season.
Head coach Thomas Tuchel’s announcement from the club’s official website:
“We have decided not to renew the contract. For us it was a difficult, complex decision because it includes both a sporting and a human component. Andi is a unique character – his experience, his social skills, he is an important player I personally appreciate immensely. Andi is a clear leader in the team – he has clearly shown his commitment. The decision to extend the contract is purely of sporting nature.”
The plan to release the attacking midfielder who has scored 6 goals and setup team mates for another 5 in 26 Bundesliga appearances this season comes down to his position in the formations moving forward.
“We will now present any player as a 1:1 replacement for Andi. We plan the tasks generally across multiple shoulders and want the flexibility to give us more options. There are many scenarios that we can imagine. “
Mainz 05 team manager Christian Heidel stated that it was not a financial decision:
“The media may give the impression that Andi had demanded too much. Money was never in our negotiations and it never became an issue. The reasons behind the decision were exclusively sporting.”
Mainz 05 were held 1-1 at home by Werder Bremen last weekend to extend their unbeaten run to seven matches, six of which have been draws. They remain in the hunt for a European place ahead of their trip to 1. FC Nürnberg on Sunday (7 April).
Andreas Ivanschitz has scored 6 goals in 26 Bundesliga appearances this season, including the winner against Bayer 04 Leverkusen in early March. The 29-year old has 60 caps for Austria.
